RIAM Exams
In addition to drama, dance and singing, students aged 6-18 are given the option to undertake Royal Irish Academy exams once a year.
For the past twenty-eight years we have prepared and coached students from 6 years old to 18+ for exams in speech and drama through the Academy’s Drama and Communications Programme. In this time we have had a good opportunity to see how participating in the study for the exams can help to develop great life skills, such as presentation, expression, memory—and great confidence.
The Royal Irish Academy of Music is an associate college of Trinity College Dublin. RIAM Exams were founded in 1894 to support students of music and drama at every stage of their learning journey. Their team of examiners travel throughout the country to examine candidates in their own locality across the 32 counties of Ireland. This provides an external and objective analysis of students’ progress through a graded speech and drama examination system. Their syllabi provide a good structure for work on creative and technical aspects which we cover in classes as students move from beginner to the most senior grades.
The Little Duke Theatre is one of the centres for speech and drama exams with the Academy and exams are held annually. Examiners are well trained professionals, in child protection as well as drama, and always treat the candidates with encouragement and sensitivity.
In 2025 Brenda Harrington was awarded an RIAM Spotlight Award for teaching and commitment to our students.
